South Belfast is walkable, and most of what is worth doing sits on four stretches: the Ormeau Road and Ormeau Park, Stranmillis and the Lagan towpath, the university streets around Botanic Gardens, and the Lisburn Road. A good afternoon here usually means coffee somewhere independent, a walk by the river or through a park, and eating on one of those roads rather than heading into the city centre.
Ormeau Road and Ormeau Park, BT7
The Ormeau Road runs from the bridge out towards Ormeau Park, and the stretch in between is one of the densest runs of independent places in the city. Cafés, bakeries, salons, barbers and small kitchens sit in among the houses rather than in a retail park, so the whole road works on foot.
Ormeau Park itself is the largest park in this part of town, with playing fields, long avenues of trees and enough room that it rarely feels busy. It is the obvious pairing with a coffee from the road, and it is five minutes from the Gasworks and the river.
Stranmillis and the towpath, BT9
Stranmillis is quieter and more village-like. The Lagan towpath starts here and runs south for miles, flat the whole way, which makes it the easiest good walk in Belfast. Turn back at the Lock Keeper's Inn and you have an hour. Keep going and you can reach Lisburn.
The streets behind Stranmillis Road are residential, so the businesses that survive there are the ones locals actually use. It is a good area for a slow Saturday rather than a night out.
Botanic and the university streets
Botanic Gardens sits behind Queen's University and is free to walk into, as is the Palm House inside it. The Ulster Museum is in the same grounds and is also free, which makes this the best value afternoon in South Belfast when the weather turns.
The streets around Botanic Avenue and Stranmillis Road are student territory in term time, so they are busiest in the evenings and quietest in the mornings. If you want the area without the crowds, go before noon.
The Lisburn Road, BT9
The Lisburn Road is the longest run of independent shops in Belfast, and it changes character as you go: boutiques, salons, galleries and small restaurants towards the city end, more residential further out. It is the part of South Belfast most worth browsing rather than aiming at one destination.
When to go
Saturday mornings are the calmest time to have any of it to yourself. Sunday is the busiest for brunch, so anywhere small will have a wait by eleven. Summer evenings belong to the towpath and the parks, and in winter the museum and the Palm House are the reason to come out at all.
